The history behind Capitol Squash Club

The Capitol building on the corner of Duke St and North Rd in St.Helens was formerly a Cinema, one of two in the Town Centre

It`s decline started at around the age when Video recorders and Rental Shops started their boom in the late 70`s early 80`s. The building was bought by Dave Whelan (former chair of Wigan Athletic) and initially opened with 7 Squash Courts and a Gymnasium.

At that time the squash section had well over 300 members. In the late 80`s the local YMCA bought the building and continued with it`s success and thriving Membership. This lasted until around 2012 - 13 when the number of active players declined and the building was then sold to a former Member who wanted to see the continuation of Squash being played on site

Initially around 40 Members agreed to form a not for profit Members run Co-Operative, paying subs to enable the Club to remain open and pay its bills. That number has now grown to over 100 and the Club fields 6 Teams in the North West Counties Squash Leagues and has a thriving Junior Section that meets on Saturday mornings. We have the unique position of being open 24 x 7 x 365 as when you join you receive the means to enter the Club and can therefore play at any time of day and night.

We are an all inclusive Club with 3 well maintained glass back squash courts and welcome people of all standards and abilities. We run coaching programs for beginners and improvers and are actively seeking new members all the time

£35 per month unlimited use. Add £10 per additional child*

£50 per month unlimited use. Add £25 per additional child*

* for Female adult reduce monthly fee by £10
